Every. Body. should have access to necessary medical treatment.
There is an Equity. problem when it comes to obesity treatment in Australia.
Why Every. Body. Equity?
Clinical obesity is a complex disease, not a lifestyle choice. It requires real treatment not blame.
Obesity has overtaken smoking as the leading cause of disease in Australia.
Obesity treatment remains out of reach for those who most need it.
Without action, obesity will cost Australia $87 billion in the next decade — the cost of inaction is staggering.
Every.Body.Equity. is advocating for improved access to bariatric surgery within the Australian public health system.
Why Bariatric Surgery?
For many people with severe clinical obesity, bariatric (metabolic) surgery is the most effective treatment. 95% of public hospitals refuse to provide bariatric surgery. Instead people suffer with obesity-related diseases and require costly treatments to manage these.
This is about stigma and about equity.
Action is required to increase provision of bariatric surgery in our public hospitals.
